Imphal, February 14 2012:
Finally development work of NH 37 (Imphal-Jiribam highway) has started making commendable headway, following stringent instructions issued from the authorities concerned.
This was discovered during a recent inspection trip by ICHAM functionaries and media persons.
Three Assam based private companiesGautam Construction Company, Nidhi Enterprises and Anupam Bricks and Concrete Industry, are also working on the highway after BRO outsourced some portions of the highway to them.
Gautam Construction Company was found leading the way in taking the work forward.
Out of the 20 Kms long portion out-sourced to them, the company has finished black-topping over a stretch of 5 Kms .
Moreover, WBM work has been completed for several kilometres and these portions were seen being readied for black-topping.
ABCI which started work on the highway since December last year has commenced granular sub-base work.

It was reported that villagers settled along the highway have been cooperating with the companies and the engineers were hopeful that they would receive continuous support until the highway development work is completed.
Notably Imphal-Jiribam highway was lying in total shambles until very recently.
It was only after 2006 that the attention of the people and the State Government turned towards this highway following the prolonged economic highway blockade on Imphal-Dimapur highway in 2005 .
But work on highway was abandoned once the blockade was called off.
When the SHDDC and UNC called the twin economic blockade on both NH 37 and NH 2 for a protracted period last year, ICHAM and other civil organisations refocused their attention towards development of this highway from September last year.
Since then, ICHAM has been closely monitoring the highway development by making field visits every month together with media persons.
In the meantime, ICHAM and others have submitted memoranda and representations detailing the highway's condition and the need for its development to the Ministry of Defence and Home Ministry as well as the State Government.
