Imphal, June 06 2009:
The recently installed Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) has strongly criticised alleged inefficiency of the varsity's authorities.
A MUSU statement issued by its president Philem Ibosana Singh charged MU Vice Chancellor and its Registrar of aggravating the academic atmosphere of the University by maintaining static posture inspite of the prevailing situation arising out of the recent killing of Prof Md Islamuddin necessitating prompt redressal measures.
In addition to accusing lackadaisical attitude of MU authorities for delay in the completion of boys hostel thereby depriving accommodation to several genuine students, MUSU also observed that stationing of security force personnel inside MU campus is akin to converting the varsity premises into a military zone.
Pointing out that in the wake of events following the assassination of Prof Islamuddin within the campus a large number of hostellers had left their rooms and are reluctant to return, MUSU also contended that non-completion of hostel construction several others are being denied conducive academic environment.
While drawing immediate attention of the MU authorities to ensure expeditious completion of hostel construction activities, MUSU reminded that upholding interest of the students and human resource development should be top priority of MU authorities rather than sleep over the matter compelling constant wake-up calls from the pupils.
Explaining on security measures taken up by MU authorities, MUSU demanded that conversion of the varsity into a military zone should be reviewed as there is clear indication that some security force personnel were actually involved in the gunning of the Professor.
Will the VC be able to guarantee that provision of security guard to the MU staff, teaching faculties or students would not culminate in similar fate that befell upon the slain Professor, Ibosana posed.
As involvement of security personnel in the killing of Prof Islamuddin had been known to all the security measure initiated by the VC and Registrar is neither convincing nor justifiable, he expressed.
The president also took grim note of the fact that both the VC and Registrar did not attend religious rituals conducted in honour of the slain Professor which was participated by the students and teachers of the University.
All attempts to cover up callous attitude of the MU authorities with issuance of clarification through the media could not dilute the fact that the VC and Registrar had exposed administrative inefficiency and absence of humanity.
Demanding that MU authorities at the earliest frame a definite policy to ensure academic atmosphere and sanctity of the University are protected, MUSU also called upon the varsity students to extend all possible cooperation towards restoration of the varsity's tranquillity.
