Imphal, June 06 2009:
In a rare incident of its kind, intervention of the state Governor, Gurbachan Jagat has led to the release of a couple picked up by the police before they could offer "Keinya Dan" to their daughter during her marriage ceremony.
Police released the couple following advice from the Governor who received a complaint from the younger sister of the bride.
Police picked up the couple identified as RK Rajendra and his wife RK Ongbi Jeevanlata residing at Uripok Khwaibrahmapur Leikai while the marriage ceremony of their daughter was in progress.
Youngest daughter of the couple, Miss RK Sanjukta approached the Governor and pleaded with him to intervene.
Relating the story behind the incident, Miss Sanjukta told media persons at a press meet at Manipur Press Club, Major Khul here today that there is no criminal record against her parents, but a case in connection with her brother's divorce with her sister-in law registered in 2007 is still pending in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal and at a family court in Pune, Maharastra.
Earlier, the family was involved in the case but had been relieved from the case by the Court, she said.
Her brother was a former Army Major and after retirement is currently engaged in other job, and has been living outside the state.
They are four sisters and one brother.
Two already got married.
Her parents were picked up by the police on the day of wedding of the third daughter which was yesterday.
Miss Sanjukta further narrated that Police came yesterday while the wedding ceremony was in progress and asked her parents to produce her elder brother.
Being unable to produce their elder brother and without paying heed to their heartfelt and repeated pleas to allow them to take part in offering "Keinya Dan" to their daughter, they were taken away by the police, Sanjukta added.
She condemned the behaviour of the police and their ill-treatment toward the helpless and weaker section of the society.
The marriage ceremony was however carried on without any disturbance with the help of the elders and local people.
However, the image of the family had been sold out, she wept.
Highly discontented over the incident, Sanjukta lodged a complaint with the OC in-charge, Imphal police station to give reasons why her parents were detained.
Apart from this, she directly approached the Governor and pleaded with him to intervene in the matter.
An apparently touched Governor Gurbachan Jagat instructed DGP Manipur Y Joykumar to secure release of the couple on humanitarian ground.
As a follow up, her parents were produced before the court today and released on bail.
But before releasing them, her mother was forced to sign a blank paper by the police, she said.
Her mother, Jeevanlata, who was also present at the press meet, told the media-persons that she was forced to sign the paper on which was written that they had borrowed Rs 6 lakh from the parental family of their son's wife and their son beat up his wife while coming to ask for repaying the amount.
