New Delhi, August 03:
SS Sidhu, a retired bureaucrat who was an accused in the Rs 420 crore HDW Submarine deal kickback scam, was today appointed Governor of trouble-torn Manipur.
Shivinder Singh Sidhu, a former Secretary of Civil Aviation, replaces Arvind Dave whose five-year-term has expired.
Manipur, of late, has witnessed violent protests against the killing of a woman allegedly by Assam Rifles and to press the demand for withdrawal of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communiqu, Sidhu's appointment would take place from the date of his joining office.
The CBI had in 1990 registered a corruption case against a number of officials, including Sidhu who had worked in a senior position in the Defence Ministry.
But the CBI last year sought permission from Delhi High Court to close the case because it said there was non-cooperation from authorities in Germany and Switzerland.
The closure report was later filed before a designated court, which is yet to decide on it.
