An assistant driver of a cement-laden Tata truck succumbed to head injuries shortly after being admitted to RIMS hospital today.
According to police report, the victim identified as Kapil Rai (17) s/o Krishna Rai thudded down on the tarmac while climbing back to the vehicle after registration of entry at the Assam Rifles check post in Noney.
Kapil Rai, originally hailed from Pangei Nepali basti but had been staying with his father at Sagoltongba, where Krishna is engaged as the care-taker of a private farm.
The police report further maintained that Kapil was provided first-aid treatment by personnel of the AR post and evacuated to RIMS hospital at around 9.15 am but failed to respond to treatment after about 25 minutes of admission.
In another motor mishap that occurred today at Patsoi Lamkhai this afternoon six male occupants, including the driver suffered injuries of varying degree (not critical) when the Tata Sumo they were travelling on veered off the road into a roadside drain.
The accident took place while the vehicle was returning to New Checkon from Konthoujam, where the occupants attended a mapam chakkouba feast (post-marriage ceremony) .
Operator of the Tata Sumo in trying to avert hitting two persons riding ahead on a Luna moped steered the wheel only to discover the vehicle had technical fault (brake fail) and fell into the drain, police sources conveyed.
All six are said to be out of danger.
