Imphal, December 31 2008:
Along with revving up the ongoing construction works of the proposed Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Science, which is being planned to start its session from August next year, the State Government has started scouting for the professors who would teach in the institute.
As functioning of atleast three departments namely Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry is essential for any new medical college, the State Government is planning to appoint three professors of the corresponding departments from medical colleges outside the State.
Talking to The Sangai Express in this connection, Health Minister Ph Parijat disclosed that out of the three departments, a professor for the Anatomy Department has already been appointed on contract basis from a medical college outside the State.
Besides this professor, two assistant professors of the department have also been appointed.
As for appointment of one professor each in Physiology and Biochemistry Departments, communication have been made with two Manipuri doctors respectively working in Agartala Medical College and Sikkim Medical College, the Health Minister informed, adding that the appointment is likely to be finalised by January 15 next year.
The Minister further said that keeping in mind the target of starting the session of the new medical college in August, recruitment of the required teaching and non-teaching staff would be completed within February next year.
Side by side, efforts would be made to complete all the construction works so as to keep everything intact for the inspection of the institute by a team of officials from the Medical Council of India who are expected to visit Imphal in March next year.
To ensure completion of all the civil works including construction of the boys's hostel and girls' hostel in time, the Minister disclosed a total of Rs 35 crores has been released from the SPA by the Planning Department yesterday.
The released amount include Rs 12 crores for the Works Department, another Rs 12 crores for the Health Department towards procuring necessary equipments and Rs 11 crores for MAHUD Department.
While pointing out that for setting up a new medical college atleast 500 patients have to be admitted in the OPD of the hospital on an average every day as per the rules of Medical Council of India, the Minister informed that every day around 600 patients are coming to the OPD of the JN Hospital which has 350 beds.
Although the rules of the Medical Council makes it mandatory to have 400 beds, the arrangements being made by the Government to set up 450 beds would be more than sufficient, the Minister added.
