Imphal, May 28 2012:
Government has begun probe into distribution of sub standard rice in Anganwadi centres in Leingangkhul and appropriate actions would be taken up against anyone found guilty over the issue, Director of Social Welfare G Seityabati has assured.
Seityabati was talking to reporters during her visit in different Anganwadi Centres in Imphal East today.
She pointed out that there are more than 9400 Anganwadi Centres in the state and supply of rice to these Centres is carried out by FCI after the Social Welfare Department deposited the amount.
The rice to each Centre is distributed by transporters under the aegis of CDPOs of the districts.
The quality of the rice distributed to the Anganwadi Centres is same with those of BPL rice and the rice distributed under Wheat Based Nutrition Programme.
Besides, around 1946 Self Help Groups (SHGs) established under the state government's policy are helping in distribution of the allocated rice quotas to the Anganwadi centres.
One SHG is entrusted with the task of distributing rice to 5 or 6 Anganwadi Centres.
Cash to buy other essential nutritional items is also given to the Anganwadi Centres through these SHGs, she added.
Deputy Director of the Department L Shama; Social Welfare Officer Mingthila and many supervisors of the Department accompanied the Director during the visit.
