Imphal, September 15 2014:
Outstanding students of Government schools and teachers who taught them were felicitated today at Classic Hotel under the aegis of Romi Industries, Thangmeiband.
Speaking at the occasion, Education Minister M Okendro said that the Government did not declare a holiday in schools and colleges not because the Government had power but it was driven by the apprehension that they might be roped in by JCILPS activists who may put them in a risky situation.
Noting that majority of students studying in Government schools belong to poor families, Okendro said that as such it is the foremost duty of teachers to teach and groom them properly.
Noting that most of the people see Government schools and teachers as lacking competitive quality, Okendro claimed that Government schools and Government teachers are not inferior to private schools in any aspect.
Students should work hard keeping this in mind.
He also hailed Romi Industries proprietor Kh Dhanachandra for felicitating Government school students and teachers.
There might be many grievances in the process of rationalization of teachers said Okendro and added that all procedural lapses and errors, if there were any, would be amended soon.
Saying that teaching is greatest of all professions, Okendro claimed that there would be no infrastructure shortfalls in any Government schools once the 14th Finance Commission comes into effect.
Later, Romi Industries presented cash reward of Rs 3000 and memento each to Thingom Shayalakshmi and Catherine Yumnam who won the 17th and 20th position in the Class X exam of 2013-14 conducted by Board of Secondary Education, Manipur.
Shayalakshmi and Catherine are students of Wangkhei High School.
Apart from donating Rs 40,000 to the schools, 32 teachers of the school were felicitated by presenting a memento each.
The function was presided by Technical and Higher Education Commissioner P Vaiphei.
