Imphal, December 29:
Stepping up the offensive against militants, personnel of Imphal East Commandos gunned down a youth at a spot between Chingnungkok and Happylane two Kms south east of Lamlai PS today at about 3.45 pm.
According to police, the incident occurred when three youths on a motorcycle fired at a commando team when signaled to stop for frisking.
Although taken by surprise, the commando personnel immediately retaliated and gunned down one of the youths in the ensuing encounter.
The two other youths managed to escape on the motorcycle taking advantage of the narrow lanes in the area, added the source.
One hand grenade was recovered from the slain youth.
Lamlai police has registered a case in connection with the incident.
The victim's body has been deposited at RIMS Morgue.
The unidentified youth is suspected to be about 25 years and has pierced ear lobes.
He received bullet wounds on the stomach and chest.
He is clad in blue jean pant and a black T Shirt.
Mention may be made here that well armed militants had ambushed a commando team at Nongren Chingjin on December 25 killing five commando personnel including an SI.
The UGs had also decamped with one LMG, three AK 47 rifles and two 9 mm pistols.
Meanwhile, Imphal West Dist Police commandos launched a combing operation in and around Kasturi Bridge Thangal Bazar this morning between 10 to 12.However no arrest was made during the operation.
Tripura victims: Three persons from Manipur were among thirteen Territorial Army personnel killed in yesterday�s ambush at Dangabari area of South Tripura.
The ambush launched by suspected militants of the national Liberation Front of Tripura had claimed 17 lives, including one of the attackers and three civilians.
The deceased Territorial army personnel from Manipur have been identified as havildar H Brojen Singh 38 yrs (119 Bn) s/o H Kwaklei of Samram Mayai Leikai, Sepoy Ksh Bhubaneshwor Singh 25 yrs s/o Ksh Tunal of Kairembikhok Awang Leikai and Sepoy H Ibomcha Singh 28 yrs s/o (L) Kesho Singh of Mayang Imphal Heijumayambi.
All the three bodies were brought to Imphal Airport this afternoon by a special Indian Air force helicopter.
