The heavy down pour that lashed the State yesterday and today morning has given a glimmer of hope to the State farmers who were reeling under a prolonged dry spell and had created a drought like situation giving fear of an impending famine.
Sources disclosed that the rainfall recorded since yesterday till 8 am of today was a healthy 67.8 mm.
With this the total rainfall rate recorded for this month till today is 175.38 mm which is close to the actual rate of 184.6 mm for this month.
The heavy downpour has really helped the parched fields however problems may arise if there is no rainfall within the coming days.
A meeting with district Agricultural Officers headed by the Director was convened today at the office chamber of the latter.
The meeting discussed in detail the current situation of all paddy fields.
Noting that the worst hit area is Imphal East district the meeting decided to depute officials concerned to assess the situation there.
Discussions on pest control particularly some insects which have been attacking standing crops at Keirao also featured in today's meeting.
Officials concerned would also be sent to assess the situation, added sources.
Instructions have been given to submit their reports to the Directorate by August 29.
