The Manipur Truck Owners' Welfare Association has submitted a memorandum to the Governor urging, him to provide armed escort and ROP along NH-39 and to compensate for the looted rice, burning of vehicles and injuries caused to drivers due to the indefinite economic blockade on the highways.
In a 7 point representation submitted to the Governor, the truckers� body said the Government of Nagaland should compensate for the partial burning of a truck at Dimapur on August 10 by unidentified gunmen.
Two drivers were also abducted and subsequently released after 9 days.
One Tata truck carrying LPG was also burnt down by blockade supporters near Tadubi saidthe representation and added that more than 80 vehicles have been damaged and over 20 drivers injured in stone pelting since the highway blockade called by the Naga Youth Front came into force from August 11.All these happened within Senapati district, it said.
The Governor was urged to compensate for the losses incurred and injuries caused to the drivers.
The representation also demanded adequate security on the highways and ROP.
The truckers also urged the Governor to take steps and stop the economic blockade.
Meanwhile representatives of the All Manipur Government College Teachers' Association met the Governor today and drew the attention of the Governor to economic blockade and expressed their resentment over the inept handling of the issue by the Central and State Governments.
The All Manipur College Teachers' Association has also submitted a memorandum to the Governor urging him to take up steps and curb the blockade supporters whose actions have jeopardized the lives of the people.
Pointing out the sufferings of the people, the memorandum said that economic blockade have sent prices skyrocketing and due to non availability of fuel all passenger vehicles including school buses have stopped operation.
The efforts of the blockade supporters to unsettle the lives of the people is gross violation of human rights, said the teachers' body.
The State CPI unit today stated that people especially in far flung areas are facing immense hardship due to the economic blockade called by the Naga Youth Front on the national highway.
All India Students' Federation termed the blockade as undemocratic.
