Imphal, September 26 2013:
Against the backdrop of a very strange phenomenon that occurred yesterday when a large number of crabs swam along Thoubal river , the People for Animal (PFA) Thoubal has raised a question over whether the aquatic eco- system of Thoubal river has been disturbed.
According to a PFA statement, a strange phenomenon happened at Thoubal river near Thoubal bridge area yesterday when casts of crabs came out in hordes.
A bucket and a half of crabs (about 300 crabs) could be collected in less then 30 minutes.
Many people were seen standing at the side of the river with buckets in their hands.
Professional fishermen could collect more of the crabs as they could find many under the rocks of the shallow area.
Some admitted to have found more than 5 crabs under a rock.
They also said that some small fishes and water snakes were also seen.
Markets, benders and road site eatable booths were filled with live and fried crabs till late afternoon yesterday, the PFA said.
It is said that similar incident happened few months back along Thoubal river where prawns and shrimps came out in large number.
Many hold the belief that such phenomenon occurs when "Wangbren" a deity of Meitei's swims across the river.
Some says it might be due to irregular rise and fall of Thoubal water level.
Raising the alarm that these phenomenon could not be taken lightly as it might be an indication of sudden disturbance of the aquatic eco- system of Thoubal river which could prove fatal for human too, the PFA has said measures should be taken up to check the occurrence of such phenomenon while stressing on the urgency to study its causes and effect.
