Health awareness at Tamenglong

The District Health Mission Society (DHMS), Tamenglong conducted a series of awareness campaign on implementation of Janani Shuraksha Yojana (JSY), Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), strengthening immunization, importance of Breast Feeding and other related convergent health programmes such as Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP), National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) and National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) from 23rd to 25th September 2013 at PHC Haochong, PHC Noney, Khundong village and PHSC Nurathel of Tamenglong District.
The campaign was jointly led by Dr.Chambo Gonmei, CMO/District Mission Director, Tamenglong and BT Thambou, Member of ADC as well as District Health Mission, Society, Tamenglong.
In connection with the campaign, Dr.Chambo Gonmei said that public need to know about the new schemes and guidelines of JSY, JSSK and the importance of immunization of pregnant mothers and children against the six killer diseases, namely TB, Poliomyelitis, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (whooping cough) and Measles.
He explained that while Hepatitis-B vaccination is given to children from birth, JSSK entitles all pregnant women and newborn and infants upto 1 year of free referral transportation, pick-up and dropping of the mother; free diet for 3 days for normal delivery in the hospital and 7 days free diet for those who had C-Section; free blood & urine investigation; free drug consumables; free blood transfusion; free treatment for sick new born & infant upto 1 year.
The Chief Medical Officer also said that for free transportation of referral cases under JSSK, all the health institutions require ambulance and drivers.
As per the new guidelines, all the pregnant mothers who are registered in a health centre and had undergone a minimum of 3 ante-natal checkups (ANC) are entitled to JSY benefits and there are no age criteria for all the pregnant mothers.
He disclosed that DHMS, Tamenglong is planning to organize a mega event in the near future under the theme "Towards a Healthy World for Mother and Child" .
The ADC Member, BT Thambou insisted all the staff to be regular in performing their duties in spite of many constraints faced by them.
He also assured that he would pursue with the higher authorities for providing all the required materials, manpower and other logistic supports.
X-ray should be installed in all the PHCs and the clinical laboratories should be established for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Because of the erratic power supply solar plants need to be installed in all the peripheral health institutions.
He also noted the need to have one ambulance for the PHC Haochong from any available source for the welfare of the patients.
He said that instead of overcrowding medical officers in the valley more doctors should reach out to all the interior and hilly parts of Manipur with love, concern and dedication to care the sick and down trodden people.
Rationalization of posting of doctors, nurses and paramedical staff is a must for efficient healthcare delivery system.
So, for the smooth implementation of all the health and development programmes, the need of the hour is 'Political and Administrative Commitment', he added.
Apart from resource persons talking on the various related topics, free health check-ups were conducted and medicines provided to the patients during the campaign.
