Owing to prolonged neglect by successive Governments and denial of justice to the first college of Chandel district, the Maring Students' Union, Kuki Students' Community Pallel, Aimol Students' Union and Chothe Students' Union, Tarao Students' Union, Youths' Volunteers Association Pallel and Moyon Students' Union of Chandel district have formed a Students' Joint Action Committee for Conversion of South East Manipur College, Komlathabi to press their demand for conversion of the college into a full-fledged Government college and warned of agitation if the demands are not fulfilled within December 30.In a representation submitted to the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh today, the JAC while calling for immediate necessary action of the Government; stated that the college which was established way back in 1981 to cater to the needs of the tribal students of the district has been neglected by successive Government.
Decrying the indifference of the Government; the JAC added that the College which was granted affiliation by Manipur University in 1983 has been denied Recurring grant-in-aid by the State Government till date.
However the Government extended the aid to colleges which were established much later on.
The JAC stated that the college has been rendering yeoman service to the various tribes and communities for the last 21 years without receiving any financial assistance from the Government after the people felt the need for establishing such a college to cater to the educational needs of the people of the district.
On the reported move of the State Government to convert some existing aided colleges into Government college in the valley district, the students' body urged the Government to grant due recognition as it is the only college in the district with a rightful place.
