Imphal, December 06 2013 :
People for Animal, Thoubal has expressed shock over the mass killing of migratory birds using poison at Loktak Lake.
In a statement, the animal rights body said that compared to other areas of the State, Loktak Lake and its surrounding areas witness arrival of maximum number of migratory birds during winter.
It added that NGOs of Bishnupur district which are working in the field of environment conservation must take proactive role in checking the menace in collaboration with the State Forest Department and villagers.
Although, campaigns like photography, census, awareness and children's competitions were organised from time to time, such campaigns have brought little change, it added.
The animal rights body questioned, "Is the mass poisoning of bird a result of such awareness ? We cannot protect wildlife on papers only.
We have to directly/physically maintain contact with animals, birds and poachers" .
It added that giving treatment to an injured bird on animal day and night by animal lovers would not serve any purpose while many birds and animals are being killed by poachers.
People of Bishnupur district should be more affectionate to animals and birds, eco-concern, gentle and have second thoughts, PFA Thoubal said.
It also questioned why the State Forest Department cannot deploy staff and volunteers to the areas where migratory birds arrive during winter season.
It is the matter of a few months only, it added.
Interestingly, no bird poacher has been apprehended this year by the Forest Department and NGOs while thousands of birds are being poisoned everyday.
Opining that the Government must strengthen the Forest Department in this regard, PFA Thoubal said that expending crores of money in organising festivals has less significance than managing forest and wildlife.
A detailed report in this connection would be sent to PFA Chairperson and concerned Ministry as well, it added.
