Imphal, November 06 2023:
Alternative Theatre Group celebrated its 8th Foundation Day on Monday at Brahmapur Nahabam with social scientist Dhanabir Laishram as chief guest.
Presenting a talk on 'Role of organisation in preservation and promotion of art' during the celebration, cultural and social activist Narendra Ningombam said that performing arts originated under the royal patronage and later on many organisations emerged to preserve and promote performing arts.
Performing art forms like Pena Phamsak, Waree Leeba and Khongjom Parba which glorify kings of the land in the form of oral presentations have become almost defunct now with one of the factors for its degeration being improper conduct of organisations working in this field, he said, adding that performing arts could not move forward due to selfishness of those running the organisations.
He then stressed the need for such organisations to function sincerely for saving performing arts for the future generation.
Meanwhile, Alternative Theatre Group secretary Roji Brahmacharimayum said that groups working in the field of performing arts must work with dedication to preserve and promote the dying performing art forms of the land.
The event was also attended by senior actor and director Ak Bengol.
