Festival of contemporary plays begins

Imphal, May 22 2011:
A weeklong State level festival of contemporary plays commenced from today at JN Manipur Dance Academy.
The festival is being organised by Manipur Ensemble, Imphal under the sponsorship of Ministry of Culture, Govt of India.
Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker I Hemochandra Singh and Director of Art and Culture Dr K Sobita graced the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, Hemochandra noted that with the rapid invasion of the Manipuri society through various entertainment events such as music, movies etc, interest and popularity of theatre the purest art form amongst the upcoming generation is on the wane.
He, nevertheless, exuded confidence of the art form's survival and growth in Manipur for the State has eminent theatre personalities apart from a number of talented artistes and theatre groups.

Stressing on the need to support aspiring artistes, he also described as 'unsung heroes' those theatre personalities who won International acclaim.
It is informed that upto May 28, one play would be staged everyday.
The festival will feature plays such as Abhigyana Sakuntalam, Rajarshi Bheigyachandra, Antigone, Bhaghwtjukiam, Angangba Kabirei, Chandalika and Mangal Yaodraba Numit.
Festival coordinator Kshetri Jugindro said the event would be expanded in the next edition through inclusion of more theatre groups.
Abhigyana Sakuntalam, directed by Jugindro was staged as the inaugural play.
