Imphal, August 23:
Going on the offensive against the SPF Government, the Manipur University Students' Union today said that the Govt machinery have unleashed a reign of criminal activities to silence the voice of the people who are democratically demanding the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the entire State of Manipur.
In a hard hitting statement issued to the press today, the student body said that the SPF Government and the State Police Department are hell bent on dubbing the present demand of the people as going against the Constitution of the country and nothing illustrates this better than the act of planting a gun and some ammunition inside the campus of the university.
Elaborating, the student body said that the police came to the university campus and displayed the gun and ammunition in front of the men's hostel claiming that the same were recovered from the backyard of the hostel at about 12 am.
The VC was informed of the matter only at about 2.30 am; said MUSU and questioned under what ground the police claimed that the gun was recovered in the presence of the VC and hostel warden.
The students also questioned under what basis the police claimed that the gun was seized from room number 118, the next day.
The State Govt should not come under the illusion that it can fool the 120 hostellers; including research scholars and PG students, by coming out with some cooked up story, said MUSU.
To paint the present movement in the wrong light and to give it a criminal hue, the State Government has also pressed into service some of its agents to set offices on fire and cause destruction further said the statement.
