Imphal, July 14 2016:
MLA of Wangkhei Assembly Consti-tuency Y Irabot has asked workers to stop construction works on a disputed land at New Checkon which has been taken possession by an individual.
The MLA claims that the land which was earlier known as Tribal Colony belonged to the State Govt until it was illegally encroached by some people reportedly from Thoubal.
Irabot continued that the disputed land once belonged to the tribal communities settled in Checkon area and now one individual has taken possession of it.
Such illegal encroachment against Govt's land is prevalent in the State and it is not a good sign, he added.
The matter was brought to the notice of the State Govt previously in the past State Assembly session, but the then DC of Imphal East district RK Dinesh denied the allegations, the MLA said.

Such intrusion on Govt's land is frequent in the State, he said and cited examples of the Lamlongei incident where the National Green Tribunal intervened to stop excessive destruction of reserved forest land for construction of a hospital.
Y Irabot added that the matter will be brought to the notice of the State Govt in the upcoming State Assembly session.
Unless a settlement is brought on the matter, any form of construction should be stopped, he said.
On the other hand, Secretary of New Checkon Bazar Women Society L Malini stated that the illegal land encroachment by certain individuals is very unruly.
Such acts should not be repeated, she said.
Md Ibo who looked after the land on questioning revealed that the land belongs to Dr Heramot from Thoubal and he has been working as the caretaker for the last three years.
