AR seizes areca nuts, SFs recover weapons

Imphal, October 18 2023:
Assam Rifles foiled a major cross border smuggling attempt on Wednesday when 601 bags of areca nuts valued at Rs 6.444 crore loaded in 13 Shaktiman trucks were seized in Phaikoh area under Kamjong district.
According to PRO IGAR (S), the contraband items along with 23 individuals who were drivers/ co-drivers were coming from international border towards the Indian side.
The apprehended individuals along with the seized items and vehicles have been handed over to Forest Department, Kamjong for further legal proceedings, the PRO informed.
On the other hand, as part of state wide combing operations to recover looted, illegal arms and ammunition, a joint security forces launched intelligence based search operation in general area Dampi village in Churachandpur district on Tuesday.
During the search operation the security forces recovered one each of 9 mm pistol with magazine, country made single barrel rifle, rifle 12mm bore, country made improvised mortar, rocket propelled grenade, country made improvised bomb along with some ammunition and combat dress on the outskirts of the village, the PRO informed.
Alongside the search operation, the security forces also conducted a medical camp and distributed medicines and essential items to the villagers to provide them relief during the on-going crisis, the PRO added.
