Conference on Palliative Care begins

The 4th PALLICON 2023, or International Conference on Palliative Care, which is being jointly organised by Palliative Care Society, Imphal, Department of Community Medicine, RIMS and NPPC NHM, Manipur on the theme of 'Early Palliative Care For All', began from Friday.
The inaugural function was attended by RIMS director Prof Dr H Priyosakhi Devi aS chief guest, and Society president Dr Ksh Manglem Singh as president while Shija Hospitals and Research Institute chairman cum managing director Dr Palin Khundongbam, RIMS medical superintendent Dr Nepram Sanjib Singh, Institute of Palliative Medicine, Calicut's Dr Suresh Kumar, Palliative Care Society, Imphal secretary Dr N Subodha and Department of Community Medicine, RIMS head and dean Brojendro Akoijam were present as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Priyosakhi Devi recounted that palliative care was previously synonymous with care provided to cancer patients, but now it covers all other ailments including geriatric care and should be provided carefully.
She then wished for further expansion of palliative care in Manipur and across the world.
In his speech, Dr Ksh Manglem said that palliative care is about making the last moments of a terminally-ill patient comfortable.
Palliative care givers, namely volunteers, nurses and doctors, came to the fore in 2014 and are now part of a well-established society under National Health Mission.
The state government has been training community health officers and medical officers to provide palliative care to patients in rural areas, who are immobilised and cannot be hospitalised, he said.
The conference will culminate on Saturday.
