International conference on Palliative care kicks off

The 4th Pallicon 2023, a two-day international conference on palliative care was kicked off today at the Jubilee Hall of RIMS on the theme "Early palliative care for all" .
The event was jointly organized by Palliative Care Society Imphal (PCSI), Department of Community Medicine, RIMS and NPPC - NHM Manipur.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor H Priyosakhi Devi, Director, RIMS stated that earlier people had little knowledge about palliative care, however, due to the efforts of Palliative Care Society Imphal, the concept has become more well-known.
She also clarified that palliative care is not reserved for cancer patients alone and that various patients can receive this care.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Kshetrimayum Manglem Singh, president, PCSI, stated that the Society was established in 2014 .
He stated that palliative care is given to patients suffering from serious, complex and terminal illnesses with the goal of optimizing their quality of life and mitigating their suffering during the last chapter of their life.
Further, he maintained that palliative care is also provided under the National Health Mission.
The Government has deployed trained Community Health Officers and Medical Officers at Health Centres across many villages of the State to provide this care to home-bound patients who do not have the necessary means to be admitted to hospitals.
It may noted that the event was also attended by Dr Palin Khundongbam, Managing Director, Shija hospital and Research Institute (SHRI) and founding president of PCSI; Dr Nepram Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS; Dr N Subodha, secretary, PCSI and Dr Brogen Singh Akoijam, Dean (Academy), RIMS.
