An alleged armed cadre of the proscribed KCP (MC) who came to demand money and triggered a hand grenade has been rounded up by the local people and after a good thrashing handed over to the police.
The incident occurred at around 7 pm yesterday at Awang Sekmai Nongthonban under Sekmai Police Station of Imphal West district.
The armed cadre who has landed in police custody has been identified as Langpoklakpam Shanta (25) s/o Birsingh of Nilakuthi Makha Leikai.
According to report, Shanta came along with one Lulun Kuki of Churachandpur to the residence of one Maharabam Gouro (52), who is an Assistant Commissioner in the Revenue Department, located near Awang Sekmai New Market at around 7 pm yesterday to demand money.
As the family members did not comply with the demand, they lobbed a hand grenade which exploded before leaving.
The hand grenade landed and exploded behind the residence of Gouro and no one was injured in the incident.
Soon after, on getting the news, infuriated local people chased them and over powered Shanta though Lulun Kuki managed to escape.
While the infuriated local people were thrashing Shanta, personnel of the District Police Commandos attached with Sekmai Police arrived and took him into their custody.
Police have recovered one demand note signed by Thoubal district commander of KCP (MC) and addressed to Gouro from the possession of Shanta.
On further interrogation, Shanta has also disclosed that the grenade attack had been carried out at the directive of one commander in-charge of the outfit identified as Lamyanba Khuman alias Kumar alias Mani of
Nilakuthi.
Police have registered a case in connection with the incident and after being produced before the Court of CJM today, Shanta has been remanded to police custody for six days.
It is said that KCP (MC) has demanded Rs 3 lakhs from Gouro and his residence had also been come under firing attack on the night of January 3 this year.
In protest against the last evening's bomb attack, a Wakat Meepham was staged near Sekmai New Market today.
