Imphal, January 14 2009:
THE NUMBER of people killed during the last six months in Manipur is much more than the Mumbai incident which is considered a terrible incident in which many people were killed.
Though the situation in the state has become very serious, the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre has not taken up any concrete action to protect the lives and properties of the people.
This indicates the Congress government's apathy towards Manipur.
This was stated by Secretary of BJP zonal organisation, North East India, Pchandra Sekhar Rao in Imphal today.
Addressing a press conference held at the office of BJP Manipur Pradesh at Keishampat here, P Chandrasekhar Rao further said that Manipur has turned into a killing field due to the deteriorating law and order situation.
The BJP was ready to take on the Congress in the Inner Manipur Parliamentary elections in April-May this year.
Chandra Shekhar Rao, who has been camping in the capital since Monday on a three-day visit, addressing a press conference held at the party office in Imphal stated that he was here in the state in connection with the upcoming Parliamentary elections.
Further speaking during the conference he said that with the failure of the state government to tackle the deteriorating law and order situation, Manipur was turning into a killing field with daily killings.
He further stated that even the Central government was not taking the situation of Manipur seriously which according to him was a clear indication of the Congress led UPA government's indifference towards the people of Manipur.
The prevailing law and order situation of Manipur has led to series of violation of rights including the right to freedom of the media which is also another clear indication of the weakness of both the state and central governments, Chandra Shekhar Rao pointed out.
He further pointed out that the Ibobi Singh government has failed in governance as there have been rampant extortions, free smuggling of arms and drugs and suggested the need to seal the border.
With such failures of the state government the zonal secretary of the BJP asserted that it was time to change the government of the state and added that the BJP was ready to take on the Congress for the Inner Manipur Parliamentary elections due to be held in the next few months.
He further said that BJP demands the Union Home Minister to come to Manipur to study the ground reality of the prevailing situation so as to bring an order.
The BJP leader revealed that the process is underway to bring out a consensus candidate with non-Congress and like minded parties for the upcoming Parliamentary elections.
President of BJP Manipur Pradesh, Dr H Borbabu, who also spoke at the press conference, expressed concern that the hope of the New Year bringing peace and happiness has been shattered with the continuous killings.
Moreover it is a matter of grave concern that the government of Manipur has announced Rs 5 lakh award to the police commandos for killing five insurgents in Thoubal district in the first month of the New Year.
Without ascertaining the facts whether those killed persons were innocent or underground activists or if there was a legal provision for killing such persons, the government just announced cash awards for the police commandos.
This the party strongly condemns, Dr Borbabu said.
