In the upcoming Parliament election likely to be held in April/ May, BJP has been working on fielding a consensus candidate of the NDA in consultation with other regional parties, general organising secretary, North East in charge of the party P Chandrashekhar Rao has announced.
Addressing a press conference at the office of the BJP State unit located at Nityapat Chuthek here today, Chandrashekhar observed that the upcoming Parliament is going to be a crucial battle of politics between the Congress and the non-Congress parties.
So talks have been already underway with the leaders of the regional political parties in Manipur like the MPP and the People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) for fielding a consensus candidate of the NDA.
Chandrashekhar, who arrived at Imphal in the afternoon of January 12 on a three-day visit to strengthen the party organisation as well as to discuss the issues related to the upcoming Parliament election, further observed that the common people of Manipur have not been able to move around freely and fearlessly as a consequent of deteriorating law and order situation in the State.
The UPA Government at the Centre has also not been paying attention to the problem of law and order in Manipur, he charged.
State unit BJP president Dr Haobam Borbabu, who was also present at the occasion, asserted that pace of development in Manipur has been reversed so much so that the ruling Congress led SPF Government has not been able to ensure even regular supply of electricity to the people.
As an act of encouragement to the killing of five persons by the State forces at Langathel last year, the Chief Minister had given a reward of Rs 5 lakhs which was condemnable, Borbabu said, adding that BJP has taken serious note of the matter.
Other party leaders and former Ministers were also present at the press conference.
