Medical fraternity protest Dr Binodkumar's murder

Imphal, October 28 2009: Closing down OPDs and Operation Theatres for the day, doctors, nurses and staff of RIMS and JN Hospital staged protest demonstrations today against the brutal murder of Dr (Retd) Huidrom Binodkumar.

Showing solidarity to their medical fraternity, doctors, nurses and staff of district hospitals, CHCs, PHCs, private clinics and hospitals also staged sit-in-protests at different places.

However, emergency services were left out of today's protest agitation.

The protest demonstration staged in front of Medical Directorate at Lamphel under the aegis of the Indian Medical Association, Manipur State Branch was also participated by staff of the Directorate in addition to doctors, nurses and staff of RIMS.

They put up placards and festoons which read as "Give peace a chance", "Please make health care a free zone", "Life is precious, respect life", "Stop killing doctors", etc.

Nurses and staff of Shija Hospitals also came there and joined the protest sitting.

A similar protest demonstration was also staged by doctors, nurses and staff of JN Hospital at its complex under the aegis of the JN Hospital Employees' Welfare Association.

Doctors, nurses and staff of Imphal Hospital, Sky Hospital, Babina Diagnostic Centre, Chamber of Commerce Research Institute and Public Hospital also protested the murder of Dr Binodkumar.

Joining the outcry and the protest agitation, doctors and staff of Lilong Primary Health Centre suspended the day's work.

After the protest demonstrations, the agitators held a meeting with the Chief Medical Officer of Imphal West district in his office chamber.

Condoling the death of Dr Binodkumar by observing two minutes' silence, the meeting appealed to all concerned not to repeat such brutal killings in future.

The medical professionals also shared the pain and grief of the bereaved family.

Dr Binodkumar was found killed in the most brutal manner by smashing his head with heavy objects at a farm house located in paddy fields of Yumnam Khunou under Heingang police station on October 22 .

He left home the previous morning for some work in a bank.

A JAC constituted against the killing of Dr Binodkumar had already called general strike demanding justice.

On the other hand, Imphal East District Police have arrested one individual in connection with the murder.
