Imphal, September 06, 2010:
With September 17, the date fixed for election of a new MPCC president fast approaching, sharp divisions have arose within the Congress party including the CLP, district presidents and PCC members.
Newly appointed PCC members and district presidents who are backing MLA E Dwijamani for the post of MPCC president have been maintaining that voting for a new president cannot be skipped as the Central election authority has already announced the election schedules.
Given the possible situation of a straight fight between incumbent president Gaikhangam and MLA Dwijamani, there is a sharp divide within the Congress.
Besides being Chairman of the Manipur Pollution Control Board, Dwijamani was general secretary of the party for a long time.
Speaking to media persons, some newly appointed PCC members and district presidents reiterated that the central election authority announced the election schedules according to a decision of the Congress Working Committee.
"We would like to elect a new popular president by holding elections to uphold democracy and strengthen the party", they said.
However, Pradesh returning officer of the scheduled election Silvius Condpan who was scheduled to arrive here tomorrow has deferred his trip.
In place of him, Pradesh election authority member Sanjoy Dadlika, recommended by the central election authority would arrive at Imphal on September 8, they said.
These newly appointed PCC members and district presidents have been holding camps in support of Dwijamani.
They asserted that Dwijamani can serve the State better with a view on its integrity while at the same time upholding interest of the party.
