Three self styled Lance Corporals of the proscribed People's Liberation Army (PLA) surrendered with their arms today before the Director General of Police, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (S) and commander of 10 Sector Assam Rifles in a ceremony held at the IGAR (S) complex, Mantripukhri.
Self styled Lance Corporal Renenson alias Joychandra Singh, Momo alias Nouba Meitei and Gokul Meitei surrendered with their arms which included a US made M-16 rifle, a AK-47 rifle and a 9 mm pistol.
A highly reliable source said that they surrendered to an Assam Rifles camp in Ukhrul district recently.
Speaking at the surrender ceremony held at IGAR (S) complex, Mantripukhri, Imphal, Manipur police chief, Y Joykumar lauded the effort of the Assam Rifles in motivating the undergrounds to join the mainstream.
"Assam Rifles would leave no stone unturned to bring back the misguided youth into the mainstream," he confidently said and assured that the police department would try its best to rehabilitate the surrendered "misguided youth".
Peace is vital for a progressive society, the DGP said revealing that development in the state has been greatly hampered by the disruptive activities in the state infested by insurgencies.
Central government has sanctioned special financial packages for development of the state.
But government machineries have not been able to take up developmental works upto the expected level as it has been greatly affected by problems of insurgency for the last many decades, the police chief observed.
He also spelt out that Assam Rifles along with the state police and other agencies would strive to curb the activities of various "terrorist groups" which are posing serious threats to the people of the state and all developmental works.
The police chief also called for people support to the security forces to bring the misguided youth back to the mainstream.
"People should render maximum help and support to the Assam Rifles, Manipur Police and other security forces to help in bringing back all the misguided youth of the state into the mainstream.
Adequate facilities would be given for the rehabilitation of surrendered cadres," he assured.
Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), CA Krishnan, is a short speech, said that neigbhouring Myanmar had agreed to co-operate with India in countering the rebels.
"We expect that they (Myanmar) will sincerely extend co-operation to India by not giving shelter to the insurgents in Myanmar," Krishnan said.
The work of border fencing at the international borderline with Myanmar in the Manipur sector is also in progress.
It has been taken up to check cross border movement of insurgents.
The 10 km border fencing currently in progress is the first phase of the border fencing project, he added.
The surrender ceremony of the three PLA cadres was also attended by family members of the surrendered cadres.
