Assam Rifles seizes smuggled items

Chandel Battalion Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) foiled smuggling of illegal timber in Chandel district along the Indo-Myanmar border yesterday.
Acting on specific intelligence, regarding smuggling of goods across the Indo Myanmar border into Chandel district, Assam Rifles troops launched a search operation and apprehended five smugglers in two vehicles plying with illegal timber at New Songyang village in Chandel district, said a statement issued by PRO Assam Rifles.
The detainees were identified as Paoginthang Haokip resident of Chikina Tengnoupal, Thenial Pulamte resident of Purumkholen, Senapati, Paominum Thouthang resident of Langkichol Veng, Tengnoupal, Jamlet Khongsai resident of Moreh, Jamkholum Mate resident of Zolenphai, Moreh, added the statement.
The recovered wood which was assessed to be worth Rs 28 lakh alongwith the detainees and vehicles were handed over to the District Forest Department for further legal action, added the statement.
In another instance, troops of Assam Rifles recovered 87 bags of Tobacco (Khaini) being transported illegally from Aina in Churachandpur district yesterday.
Troops of Assam Rifles intercepted the tobacco being transported without proper documentation which was assessed to be worth Rs 15.6 lakh, added the statement.
The recovered contraband was handed over to the Henglep Police Station for further investigation, added the statement.
