Brucella vaccination drive begins

Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services on Friday started Brucella vaccination drive organised under the aegis of Livestock Health and Disease Control as a part of National Animal Disease Control Programme for cow and buffalo calves which are 4-8 months old.
The inaugural programme of the vaccination drive for Kakching and Thoubal district was held at Pangantabi Mayai Leikai public ground, Kakching district in the presence of Pangantabi Gram Panchayat pradhan Nando, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services director Dr Ch Nandakishore, joint director (Administration) Dr Ng Ibotombi Singh, District Veterinary Office Thoubal & Kakching joint director Dr RK Khogendrajit Singh, deputy director (Dairy) Dr P Krishnamohon and ICDP project officer Dr A Devendra Singh.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Khogendrajit explained that Brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria called Brucella Abortus and could spread from animals to humans.
In cattle, it causes miscarriage of foetus, stillbirth, etc, which is big loss for cattle breeders and owners.
To protect the cattle from the disease, 4-8 month old female calves should be administered Brucella vaccine, he added.
Dr RK Khogendrajit further informed that the vaccine will be available at eight cattle vaccination centres of Thoubal and Kakching districts from Saturday onwards.
During the programme, vaccinated cattle were also ear-tagged.
