AR pays tribute to Ashoka Chakra awardee

On behalf of DG Assam Rifles, Headquarters IGAR (South) paid tribute to Ashoka Chakra and Military Cross awardee Sub Maj Kharka Bahadur Limbu of 8th Assam Rifles on Tuesday at Mantripukhri.
In a release, PRO IGAR (S) informed that officers of Assam Rifles interacted with the family members of the braveheart and remembered his supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation.
Sub Maj Limbu, who hailed from Mantripukhri, had joined Assam Rifles on December 5, 1929.He saw action in the World War II and was awarded the Military Cross for his extra ordinary courage and bravery.
On April 26, 1961, in a counter insurgency operation in Naga Hills, Limbu laid down his life while combating insurgents.
In a fierce close-quarter firefight, the brave soldier neutralised two insurgents but was grievously wounded and succumbed to his injuries.
For his exceptional courage, fighting spirit and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded Ashoka Chakra, the nation's highest peace time gallantry award.
He was the first soldier from Manipur to be awarded with Ashoka Chakra, it added.
