Imphal, July 24 2021:
Pointing out that a new type of scam/fraud is reported widely whereby cyber criminals create duplicate fake Facebook accounts of individuals using the same profile name and picture, Manipur police urged the people to be cautious of such cyber frauds.
In a release, Manipur police PRO said that these cyber criminals collect the information like profile name, photos and other details from the victim's legitimate profile and create a similar account on social media.
Using these fake accounts, cyber criminals send friend request to the friends of victims and seek financial help citing some emergency.
Those who are unaware of this foul play are trapped into this kind of fraud activity and send money to the cyber fraudsters, it added.
Highlighting some safety measures from such cyber fraud, the police urged individuals to lock their Facebook account so that cyber-criminals, who are not in their Facebook's friends, will not be able to steal their public information and create one's duplicate Facebook account.
Always verify a friend request received on Facebook and do not send money to your contact requesting money over Facebook messenger, the police said.
It further urged to check the authenticity of the messages or calls to verify before paying and informed that these cyber criminals mostly use Hindi or English, with wrong spelling and grammar, while communicating/messaging through Facebook.
They will not respond in Meiteilon or other local languages, it added.
