Imphal, August 25 2021:
Though incidents of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, violations of human rights and women's dignity with impunity granted under AFSPA by security forces have reduced to some extent, the state still needs the contribution of Meira Paibi organisations in order to safeguard the rights of women, youth, children and to bring peace and tranquillity in the society, said Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur president Longjam Memchoubi.
Speaking during the 35th foundation day of the organisation held at Khoyathong Pukhri Achouba community hall on Wednesday, she recalled how the Meira Paibi groups remained firm against the atrocities committed by security forces with impunity granted under AFSPA for decades.
Since its inception on August 25,1986, the organisation has been at the forefront of fighting against AFSPA and social injustice.
Though the situation has improved significantly, youth, women and children still cannot live in peace and happily.
In order to bring about a peaceful society, which is also safer for the youth and women in every aspect, and in order to bring unity and integrity among the people of different communities in the state Meira Paibi organisations still need to keep the fight on while holding torches, which have been the source of courage for the women warriors, she maintained.
Memchoubi also appealed to the people of Manipur to contribute their mite in strengthening the Meira Paibi movement and advised politicians and political parties to refrain from misguiding Meira Paibi organisations for their political and vested interest.
Leaders of different Meira Paibi organisations, women organisations and CSOs attended the commemorative event during which floral tributes were paid to the photos of deceased Meira Paibi leaders, Ima Kombi, RK Randhoni and RK Sanahanbi.
Later, the participants visited BB Paul Mental Development Home at Mongsangei and Yaibilen Children Home at Keibi and donated two bags of rice, one bag of potato, five litre mustard oil and other food items each to the two homes.
