Ukhrul, August 25 2021:
Tangkhul civil societies on Wednesday organised mass sit-in protests in different parts of Ukhrul town to air public resentment against the government's failure to book the killers of Thotreichan Kashung and Naosomi Lungleng.
The protests came a week after the lapse of a 48-hour ultimatum served to the government to arrest the culprits on August 16 last.
The protest demonstrations were simultaneously held at three points of Phungreitang, Awontang and Dungrei Junction.
The protesters in hundreds held banners and placards inscribed with words condemning the brutal murder and failure of the state government to nab the culprits.
They also demanded swift justice, by expediting the investigation into the case.
Later, the participants marched through the township and converged at mini-secretariat where a memorandum to the chief minister was handed over to Ukhrul DC Joseph Pauline Kamson.
The memorandum expressed strong resentment that the government has not taken any tangible action to crack the case even after a 48-hour noticed was given to the authorities on August 16 .
Now, 17 days have passed since the recovery of the lifeless bodies of the two young men who were brutally murdered by unknown persons, it said.
"This shows the lack of seriousness and lackadaisical attitude of the state authorities.
Such negligence will not only delay justice but will fuel communal misunderstanding and disturb the existing communal harmony.
Therefore, the authorities concerned are urged upon to carry out its rightful duly without any further delay and discrimination," it said.
Demanding immediate arrest of the culprits, the memorandum reiterated that the bodies would not be claimed until the public demands are met.
The public also demanded a free and fair post-mortem report at the earliest.
The bodies of Thotreichan Kashung and Naosomi Lungleng, residents of Sinakeithei village under Ukhrul AC, were recovered on the outskirt of their village on August 8, four days after they had gone missing since August 4 .
