The State Government has assured to provide 300 acres of land to set up the National Sports University at Yaithibi Loukon, said Union DoNER Minister Dr Jitendra Singh at a press conference held at Old Secretariat conference hall today.
The Minister said that in his first speech as the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi had said that the present Government is for poor people and various schemes would be taken up with a vision to provide psychological, economic and social security to them.
He also said that the North East States would be given prime importance under PM's vision and the Centre would try to enhance integrity between the people of the region and the rest of the country.
He further said that he had a meeting with Chief Minister O Ibobi to discuss three important issues - setting up of 400 KW power station in Thoubal district, setting up of National Sports University and enhancing connectivity of the State with rest of the country - today.
Regarding 400 KW power station, the Union Minister said that the power station would be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 124 crore.
Saying that necessary formalities for this project have already been completed, the Minister said that the power station would be operational within two years.
He further said that after the power station is commissioned, the State Government would be able to provide atleast 18 hours of power supply in a day to its people in all the districts.
The Centre has an objective to provide 24-hour power supply in the entire country, the Minister said and added that Gujarat had already accomplished this objective when Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister.
He also said that Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has assured to provide 300 acres of land at Yaithibi Loukon, 25 kms from Imphal in Thoubal district for setting up the National Sport University.
The varsity would be an identity of Manipur to the rest of the country, the Minister said and added that the Centre decided to set up the first sports university of the country in Manipur acknowledging the contribution of this tiny State to the sports of this vast country.
He also said that the varsity would not only bring different people from all over the country to the State but also give employment opportunities to many youth.
Saying that Chief Minister O Ibobi is concerned about the condition of NH-37 (Silchar- Imphal road), the Minister said that his Ministry would provide technical input and co-operation in the construction of the highway.
Maintaining that the Centre is keen to provide better road connectivity to the State, he said that the intra-regional good road connectivity is very important to bring any kind of development.
He said that the intra-regional road connectivity is not so good in the North East region and efforts would be put in to enhance it.
Saying that Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has requested him to introduce night flights at Tulihal airport, Dr Jitendra Singh said that he would forward the matter to the Aviation Ministry.
Informing that Dimapur-Delhi direct flight is now operational since April 15, the Minister said that efforts are being made to launch similar service between Delhi and Aizawl.
He said that with the directive of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a roster for eight Union Ministers have been made to visit the NE region every fortnight.
He also said that an exclusive TV channel for NE region christened 'Arun Prabha' was launched with the approval of the Union Cabinet on February 28 .
