Poppies destroyed; two held with drugs

Imphal, February 03 2023:
Destruction of poppy plantations in different parts of the state continues with over 39 acres of poppy plantations destroyed on Friday.
According to police report, a combined team of Kangpokpi district police, NAB, 5th and 6th IRB and personnel of forest department along with executive magistrate destroyed poppy plantations spread over 28 acres in the hill range of T Gojang village under Saikul police station.
On the other hand, Senapati police destroyed 11 acres of poppy plantation in Chalaha hill range, the report added.
In another development, a team of Kakching district police commandos arrested two people along with 932 grams of heroin from their possession on Friday.
The apprehended persons have been identified as Lamjaneng Khongsai (38) d/o late Khatlim of Sugnu Tribal under Kakching district and Md Anjar (32) s/o MV Abdul Kalam.
According to police report, a team of the commando unit led by OC Subedar S Birla Singh conducted frisking and checking near Langmeidong police outpost during which a bus coming from Sugnu was stopped for checking.
During the checking process, Lamjaneng refused to open her bag.
Suspicious of her conduct, the commando team forced open the bag and found 70 soap cases of heroin weighing around 932 grams inside.
On further questioning, Lamjaneng revealed that the drug was to be handed over to Md Anjar who would be waiting for her at Kakching auto parking.
She also provided the mobile number of Md Anjar.
Immediately, the commando team led by havaldar N Chaoba and head constable Kh Umakanta proceeded towards the said location and conducted search operation and apprehended Md Anjar.
During investigation, Md Anjar also revealed that he had earlier purchased 25 soap cases of heroin from Lamjaneng.
Both the arrestees along with the seized drugs have been handed over to Waik-hong police station for taking up necessary legal actions.
