Imphal, May 28 2015 :
Compromising the ideal of secularism is something the Congress party would never do just to gain votes from the people, said Chief Minister Okram Ibobi.
The CM was addressing a campaign meeting cum district level Congress workers conference in connection with the yearlong celebration of Dr BR Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary at Aimol Tampak, near Pallel in Chandel district today.
Criticising the BJP, the Chief Minister said that intolerance against minority Christians became more aggressive after the BJP assumed power at the Centre.
He also accused the BJP of being sectarian, championing the cause of one particular religion.
In spite of the BJP's intolerant attitude to the minorities, the party through one Union Minister has been canvassing votes with the promise of providing a football field during an election campaign at Churachandpur, he added.

Reiterating the Congress party's commitment to maintaining cordial relations with the public and work for their welfare, O Ibobi appealed to the people to extend support to the Congress so that it gets strengthened.
Further, he said that even if the BJP led NDA Government had scrapped the Special Category Status of all North Eastern States including Manipur, the State will strive to move forward for all round development.
Asserting that the Congress Govt in the State has been working to develop both the hills and valley, the CM said that the recent inauguration of composite complex of SDO, BDO, Banks including police outpost in different subdivisions is proof of the State Govt's commitment.
O Ibobi also assured the people of Aimol that the State Government would provide sufficient funds for development of hills areas besides giving all the necessary infrastructure in all parts of the State.
He urged the people not the believe what the BJP has been telling for the past many days regarding negligence of the hill people by the State Govt.Replying to a memorandum submitted to the CM by Village Authority of Aimol, Ibobi said that the existing Public Health Sub-Centre would be upgraded to a Public Health Centre very soon and added that a community hall would be constructed after the exact location is decided by all the villagers.
He later urged people who are illegally encroaching the Pallel Aimol road to stop such activities.
Dy CM and MPCC president Gaikhangam said that the statement made by some senior State BJP leaders that the removal of Special Category Status from Manipur was the handiwork of the past Congress Government while in power is a complete lie and it's more like a day light robbery.
Many immature statements made by BJP's bigwigs against the State Government in recent weeks is an indication that they are not aware of the mindset of Manipuris.
He added that the BJP is a sectarian, communal and a racist political party based only on the famous Ram Raja philosophy but they cannot act on the preaching of the Ramayana.
Later he urged the people gathered for the meeting to vote for only Congress candidates.
