Sangai likely to find new home

Dampi Reserved Forests-Northern End Portion may soon be the new home for Sangai.
A team of State Government officials and a local based society inspected the proposed site on Friday.
Those who visited the site include PN Prasad (IFS), Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) & Chief Wildlife Warden, Manipur, Bantee Konthoujam, MCS, SDO-Moirang and Professor Ningongbam, President All Manipur Buddhist Association with members of Society for New Kumbi Assembly Constituency along with its convener Bobby James Wahengbam.

After the inspection, a public meeting on the proposed site for Sangai Sanctuary was held at Kumbi Bazaar in the presence of Local MLA Sanasam Bira Singh.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Bira said Kumbi was not only a historic place but it also considered to be the birth place of Sangai.
The proposal for the Sangai Sanctuary was not new, he said and recalled that the same issue had been raised on the floor of the Manipur Assembly some decades back.
He urged the Government of Manipur to set up the Sangai Sanctuary at Kumbi.
The MLA also assured to raise the same issue in the ensuing sessions of the State Assembly.
Meanwhile, PN Prasad stressed on the need to make Sangai habitat conducive for increasing the population of the endangered wildlife.
The State Government has proposed to set up six sanctuaries in Manipur including Dampi Reserved Forests-Northern End Portion for Sangai.
He further said that the Sangai population was 204 as per 2013 survey.
The total area of proposed Sangai Sanc-tuary is 576 acres.
Bobby James Wahengbam said there was a proposal to construct a Buddhist Temple at Dampi Reserved Forests hillock with an objective to attract many tourists.
