Imphal, June 08 2021:
All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union (AMGSU) on Tuesday observed the 130th Saheed Diwas of Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri at his memorial complex located at Kanglatongbi.
Niranjan Chhetri was the first Gorkha to be martyred in India's freedom movement as he led a contingent of native Gorkha soldiers at the Khongjom battle under Manipuri hero Yubraj Tikendrajit Singh.
He was hanged to death by the Britishers on June 8, 1891 at the Western Gate of Kangla.
In a release, AMGSU informed that the observance was attended by its president LB Adhikari along with Kanglatongbi GP pradhan Meena Bista, Bharatiya Gorkha Parishang Manipur Branch general secretary Rahul Rai Bogiko and other members of the BGP.
Floral tributes were paid to the martyr by the attendees and a minute's silence was also observed.
On the other hand, AMGSU urged the authorities concerned to ensure that the rice quota meant for the eligible beneficiaries be disbursed without any deductions in all the Gorkha inhabited villages in the state.
It also drew the attention of telecom companies like Airtel and Jio to provide quality service to the customers, adding that owing to network related issues, many students have been missing their online classes and the working individuals their assigned task.
The Gorkha body further urged 'outsiders' not to enter Kanglatongbi and adjoining villages till the Covid pandemic is not over.
