Poumai Thoumi festival kicks off in Senapati

A three-day "Poumai Thoumi", the biggest post-harvest festival of the Poumai community commenced from Wednesday at Phaibung Khullen village in Senapati district.
The inaugural function held with MLA Janghemlung Panmei as chief guest was also attended by MLA Letzamang Haokip as guest of honour, MLA J Kumo Sha as chief host and Kholu Salouni as chief patron.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Panmei wished that the celebration bring unity, peace and strengthen the bond of relationship among different communities of the state.
He stated that God has given different rich culture to different tribes and tongues, which all need to uplift and preserve the culture inherited from our forefathers.
In his address address, Kholu Salouni stated that while development is taking place everywhere, education is found lacking in the region.
He also pointed out the need for unity in all undertakings for betterment of all.
MLA Letzamang Haokip, while informing that it was his first visit to Poumai region which is-the northern most part of the state, expressed his desire to visit the region frequently.
Earlier, delivering the welcome speech, Thounii Organising Committee convenor John Pou stated that it is the third mega event of the Poumai Naga community held after every 5 years.
Folk song competitions followed in the later part of the programme.
