Imphal, January 04 2023:
While stating that mass poppy cultivation after deforestation has led to a situation where people may face scarcity of potable water, CAF & PD and PHE minister L Susindro Meetei stressed the need for increasing severity of punishment to be given to the poppy cultivators.
Susindro Foundation organised a felicitation programme to honour 18 students selected for studying MBBS in previous year at the minister's Khurai Sajor Leikai residence on Wednesday during which the students were encouraged by providing cash incentives.
Speaking at the programme, minister Susindro pointed out that the government's war on drugs campaign is for the betterment of the future generations and further appealed to the people to support the same.
While opining that arrest of the village chiefs if poppy cultivation is found in areas under their jurisdiction is an appropriate step, Susindro maintained that it would be wrong to consider poppy cultivation as mere cultivation of horticulture crop.
Those selfish people who only think for themselves are destroying the society, he remarked.
The minister informed about completion of different water tanks in different areas under JJM scheme funded by National Development Bank to ensure potable drinking water to the people.
However, the tanks remained empty as there is no water due to mass deforestation.
"Who will take responsibility when people face scarcity of water?" he posed, while adding that how much water could be available to the people through hand pumps is a big question.
Expressing delight that 18 students selected for MBBS are from Khurai AC, the MLA said that a sum of Rs 10,000 each will be handed over to the students for the first phase and further assured of providing additional sum of Rs 40,000 each before completion of their course.
