To check the growing instances of road mishaps during Holi festival, Imphal West police have spelt out a special traffic drive to rein in traffic rule violators and spelt out stiff penalties for all violators.
In a statement, SP of Imphal West, S Ibocha said that the special drive will be launched to check drivers without driving license (imprisonment of 3 months or a fine of Rs 500 or both), minor driving vehicles (imprisonment of 3 months or a fine of Rs 500 or both), vehicle owners allowing a minor or a person without license to drive a vehicle (imprisonment for 3 months or a fine of Rs 1000 or both), driving without registration certificate (fine of Rs 2000 which may be increased to Rs 5000), driving without insurance certificate (imprisonment for 3 months or a fine of Rs 1000 or both), triple riding on a two wheeler (fine of Rs 300), vehicles without registration number (fine of Rs 300), drunken driving or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (imprisonment for 6 months or a fine of Rs 2000 or both), over speeding ( fine of Rs 400 for the first offence and Rs 1000 for the second offence), over loading of all vehicles (fine of Rs 300), driving at high speed posing danger to the public (imprisonment for 6 months or a fine of Rs 1000).The SP has appealed to the public to extend their co-operation and help the police in curbing road mishaps to save precious lives during the Holi festival.
The festival will be held from March 25 to March 29.All citizens and parents and elders have been urged not to send out their children and wards without valid driving license and other necessary documents to help the police discharge its duties more effectively.
Making his stand clear, the SP said that the special drive will be launched not with the intention of disturbing the festive mood of Holi but to check road mishaps during the festival.
During the last many years, road accidents have gone up alarmingly during Holi festival.
