Chief Minister Okram ibobi Singh will inaugurate the newly constructed temporary market sheds at the then Old District Hospital tomorrow.
The temporary sheds/stalls have been constructed to accommodate women vendors of Khwairamband Keithel consisting of Purana Bazar, Laksmi Bazar and Linthoinganbi market to pave the way for renovation of the historic market site with a modern market complex which was staunchly opposed by a section of the women vendors.
After dismantling the Old District Hospital, the temporary sheds covering an approximate area of 5250 feet were set up to provide marketing space to 70 displaced women vendors, with temporary accommodation space for 45 business-persons.
The temporary site has facility to store goods in three godowns, separate lavatories for men and women even as informed source disclosed that the Government is about to evict the adjoining blocks on the southern side.
While maintaining that the new eviction proposal is not connected to expansion of the temporary market shed the source necessity of carrying out the eviction drive to ease space congestion due to ongoing construction works of the Bir Tikendrajit fly-over.
The stall owners/runners affected in the eviction drive would be accommodated at the northern side of the temporary shed.
In the meantime, PDA Chairman K Ranjit and Manipur Pollution Control Board Chairman N Biren inspected the temporary market sheds this afternoon.
