Imphal, August 16, 2012:
Trinamool Congress Manipur unit president and former MP Kim Gangte has called upon both the Centre and concerned State Governments to take up necessary actions immediately so as to contain the acts of violence unleashed against students and professionals from North East in general and Manipur in particular.
Expressing her disappointment on seeing large number of students and professionals thronging to railway tickets and air transport agencies in their rush to get back home from cities like Pune, Bangalore etc, Kim Gangte questioned why the innocent students and professionals from the North East are being targeted for the communal clash that broke out in certain areas of Assam sometime back.
She also warned that if urgent actions are not taken up, the issue can go out of hand resulting in violent repercussions throughout the country.
Taking strong exception to the statements of the Union Home Minister and the Home Minister Karnataka State which dismissed the assault on North East people as nothing serious, the former MP asked who would take responsibility if the planned attacks result in severe casualties and fatalities.
She went on to question, "What is the Union Government looking at ?" The State Government too seems to be doing very little to protect Manipuri students and professionals staying in different cities of India.
Mere statements about talking with their counterparts are not enough.
The Government of Manipur must act with responsibility, Kim Gangte asserted.
She said that she would go to Delhi on August 19 and urge the party's central leaders to raise the issue at the Parliament.
The Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister and other relevant Union Ministers would be urged to give foolproof security to North Eastern people staying in different cities of the country.
TMC spokesperson RK Shivchandra said that it was not right for the Government of Manipur to remain silent when Manipur people were assaulted in such a manner which looked like avenging for the communal clash that happened in Assam.
Asking if the Government was waiting for fatal casualties among Manipuris staying outside the State, Shivchandra questioned whether the Government can take responsibility in case of any violent conflict in the State because of unwarranted attack on Manipuri students staying in different cities of India.
The Government of Manipur must make it clear that Manipur people were never involved nor supported any violent confrontation, Shivchandra asserted.
