Tribues paid on Martyrs' Memorial Day

Amidst tight security measures, the Martyrs' Memorial Day was observed today at Cheirao-ching here with people offering floral tributes at the memorial complex of the insurgent ca-dres who got killed in the course of the armed revolutio-nary movement of Manipur.
However, a large number of students were barred from entering the memorial complex by police.
Subsequently, the students paid tributes to the 'martyrs' at the foot of Cheiraoching.
Martyrs' Memorial Day is observed every year on April 13 in memory of the insurgents killed in a gun battle with security forces on April 13, 1982 at Kodompokpi and elsewhere on different dates.
In view of the Martyrs Memorial Day, stringent security measures were taken up around Cheiraoching since last evening.

People coming from different corners of Manipur paid floral tributes to the 'martyrs' at their memorial complex starting from 7 am till 3 pm.
All the people were subjected to verification at the foot of the hill before they were allowed to proceed to the memorial complex.
Police also checked them if they were carrying festoons, placards or banners embossed with anti-national phrases or words.
Students who came in their schools uniforms were barred from entering the memorial complex by police.
In this connection, City Police OC RK Tejbir said that the Court's permission was only for family members, relatives, acquaintances and well wishers of those people killed at Kodompokpi.
That was why, the students were not allowed to pay tributes at the memorial tomb, he added.
Though they were not to go up to the memorial tomb, the students paid their tributes to the 'martyrs' at the foot of Cheiraoching.
