Transport Assn demands safety on highways

All Manipur Light Vehicles Transport Owners' and Drivers' Welfare Association, Manipur has urged the state government to take up stringent action against the perpetrators and ensure safety of drivers and handymen along the two vulnerable national highways of the state.
In a statement, the Association stated that the drivers and handymen are peeved by the prevailing violent situation along the national highways and strongly condemned the act of killing driver Sorokhaibam Babu of Samurou Awang Leikai, who was on duty of transporting rice for FCI.
The Association also demanded the state government to crack down on the cadres of NSCN-IM responsible for the violent activities along the two national highways.
The state government should also take up strict action against the commander of CRPF who was on escort duty for the truckers.
The cadres of NSCN-IM even kidnapped a driver and handyman despite the presence of CRPF escort personnel, the statement added.
