Tamenglong observes International Day of Older Persons

Tamenglong, October 03 2015 :
District Social Welfare Office, Tamenglong on Thursday observed the International Day of Older Persons at Indoor Stadium Tamenglong district headquarters on October 1 under the theme "Nothing for us without us" .
Tamenglong ADM Joseph Pauline attended the function as chief guest and former ADC Chairman DM Nganthonan as guest of honour and Tamenglong DSWO N Jotish Singh as president.
Speaking on the occasion, Joseph Pauline appealed to the older persons to be proud of being old and ward off negative thoughts.
He lauded that older persons are full of experiences, knowledge, trained.
Joseph was unhappy on learning the present culture lacking proper respect towards the older persons and alienating them.
He appealed to the people to treat the older persons with gentle care and love to make them happy and listen to their requirements.
Joseph pointed out that in developed countries like Japan, the life expand is longer because people in that country have proper respect for the older persons.
Meanwhile, Nganthonang said that "It is shameful for the Government to give just Rs 100 or Rs 200 per month for the older persons after a year or two years.
It is also a punishment given to the older people who are asked to collect pension money personally by opening bank accounts, he said.
He promised to work out an appropriate mechanism for protection of life and properties of older persons.
Nganthonang urged the responsible authority to set up old age homes in Tamenglong district headquarters.
A 107-year-old identified as Guangking from Ajuram village, Tousem Sub- Division, but presently residing at Tamenglong Ward No III, is regarded as the oldest man in Tamenglong while 95-year-old Namjinglak, wife of Late Lungching of Tousem village, is also regarded as the oldest woman in the district.
They were honoured and presented with gifts on the ocasion.
Over 250 older persons attended the programme.
The district Social Welfare Office distributed umbrellas to the participants to mark the event.
