Imphal, September 27 2021:
National People's Party (NPP), which was established as a common platform for the northeast region, received a major boost from Manipur as all the four MLAs of the party were allocated ministerial portfolios in the state government, said NPP working president and Keishamthong MLA L Jayantakumar.
While inaugurating NPP women's committee office for Keishamthong AC polling station number 12/15 during a function held at Radha Raman Mandop, Keishampat Keisham Leikai on Monday, Jayantakumar said that NPP originated from the state and its main objective is to build up a common platform for the northeast region, whose people share common affinities and differ from the mainland India due to which they often suffer discrimination.
The platform was established in order to take the voice of the region to the Centre.
After a hiatus, former speaker of Lok Sabha PA Sangma, late father of incumbent Meghalaya chief minister and NPP president Conrad Sangma, revived the party.
In the 2017 state assembly election, four out of six candidates got elected and all of them were inducted as ministers.
It gave a major boost to the party and as a result, the party won an increased number of seats in Meghalaya.
Now, the party is gradually expanding in Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.
Consequently, the Election Commission of India recognised NPP as the eighth national party of the country following which the party has its own office in the national capital, Jayantakumar said.
Intending candidate of the party from Yaiskul assembly constituency Huidrom Vikramjit also attended the inauguration function.
