Tree plantation cum awareness prog held

A Tree plantation cum awareness programme organized by Maichou Langol Lukhoi Ningsing Trust, Yumjaomanbi (Maichouthel), Langol was conducted at Yumjaomanbi in Langol area here today.
Attending as guest of honour of the programme, President of All Manipur Working Journalists Union, Wangkhemcha Shyamjai stated Manipuris lack national character and put little effort in tracing their forefathers.
Although our forefathers took great care of the forests, the present generation resort to indiscriminate cutting down of trees, Shyamjai asserted, and added that the natural environment has been drastically affected due to inadequate of living space and increased need of human resources.
Saying that the present forest cover has been reduced greatly as compared to that of early days, he stated that continued plantation of trees is required for preservation of the environment.
He also added that the various media organizations also need to cover reports pertaining to environment protection.
Chief guest of the function, Thiyam Mahendra Pratap, Conservator Central circle, Forest Department, Government of Manipur, said that climate change has occurred in Manipur as a few days of rains often leads to flood while lack of rainfall frequently causes to draught.
The human beings must plant and nurture sufficient trees in order to bring welfare of their future, he said and added proper maintenance of forests will save the ecological balance.
In early days, our forefathers preserved forests in the form of deities on the belief that forests were the friends of the human beings.
If the present trend of deforestation continues unabated, the future generation would become more dangerous, he cautioned and informed that according to experts, the present forest cover is able to provide human needs only for the next 700 years.
Thingujam Bhogen, Scientific Officer, Directorate of Environment, Government of Manipur, who attended as guest of honour of the function, said the habit of planting trees should be inculcated to the new generation by way of generating awareness on tree plantation.
Principal of Oxford English School JD Angom also attended as guest of honour of the programme presided over by S.Khamba, member of the Maichou Langol Lukhoi Ningsing Trust.
