3 killed, one injured

Three persons including a police personnel were killed and one injured in a tragic incident which occurred at Chakpikarong Community Health Center campus in Chandel district last night, reports our Thoubal correspondent.
At around 8 pm, one worker identified as Naorem Hemokut Singh s/o Late N Sanatomba of Kakching Paji Leikai, who was engaged in the renovation of X-Ray and Ultra sound rooms of Chak-pikarong CHC, attacked his colleagues without any reason.
His co-workers overpowered Hemokut and tied his hand, a source said and added that he was locked up inside a building to hand him over to the police.
Even as his co-workers were waiting for the arrival of the police, Hemokut escaped from the confinement with a matchet and suddenly attacked one of his co-work-ers, who ran for his life after suffering cut injuries.
Later on, Hemokut attacked a man, who came to the health centre to meet his wife and a police personnel with a matchet killing them at the spot.
In an attempt to overpower him, police opened fire on Hemokut injuring him grievously.
After the incident, an infuriated mob gathered at the CHC campus and prevent the police to recover the two dead bodies.
They also burnt down a white colour Gypsy of the police team.
The deceased civilian has been identified as Bs Tonhring Anal s/o Bs Angching Anal of Anal Khullen and the police personnel as D Kothang Maring (Constable No 0906074) of Heinoukhong village in Chandel district.
The other injured person has been was identified as Pukhrambam Nilakanta Singh (43) s/o Late P Babudon Singh of Kakching Khunjai Leikai in Thoubal district.
Nilakanta, who worked with Hemokut with 10 other workers in the renovation of work of the health centre, said that he was attacked by Hemokut without any reason.
Nilakanta further said that when the police team arrived, Hemokut was handed over to them.
But the police team detained him and kept him in the kitchen from where he escaped with a matchet.
"Then he ran towards me and attacked repeatedly with the matchet.
And I ran towards the gate and hid on a truck loaded with woods outside the health centre," Nilakanta said.
Police sources said that on receiving a report of a 'psychiatric' man attacking persons inside the health centre, a police team rushed to the spot and saw a dead body lying at the northern gate of the health centre.
As the police team were searching for the attacker using torch light, one of the police personnel was attacked suddenly and killed by the assailant with his matchet at the spot.
In the ensuing melee, other police personnel opened some rounds of fire on him and captured the assailant.
However, Hemokut succumbed to bullet injury on the way to the Police Station.
Chandel MLA ST Nunghlung Victor, Sub-Divisional Officer and Sub-Deputy Collector of Chakpikarong and E Priyokumar, Superintendent of Police Chandel also visited the spot.
Later, Chandel MLA ST Nunghlung Victor and various civil organization leaders also attended a public meeting which was held in connection with the incident at Anal Chiefs Association Hall in Chakpikarong today.
